The United Arab Emirates is experiencing a challenging turn towards sustainable social housing. Conventional neighborhood planning and design principles are being replaced by those leading to more sustainable urban forms. To trace this challenging move, the research has investigated the degree of consideration of sustainable urban design principles in two social housing neighborhoods in Al Ain City in Abu Dhabi Emirate, UAE. The first represents a conventional urban form based on the neighborhood theory; the other represents the new sustainable design. The ultimate aim is to define the obstacles hindering the full achievement of a sustainable urban form in this housing type. To undertake research investigations, a matrix of the design principles of sustainable urban forms has been initiated in order to facilitate the assessment of the urban forms of the two selected urban communities. Some qualitatively measurable design elements have been defined for each of these principles. The results of the analysis of the shift from 'conventional' to 'sustainable' case studies have revealed some aspects that would prevent the attainment of fully sustainable urban forms in newly designed social housing neighborhoods. Finally, the research concludes by recommending some fundamental actions to help meet these challenges in future design.

It is hard to discuss Islam without bringing up the person of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). The urban crisis has become a significant issue due to society's Westernization. The experts say that the Islamic approach appears to be the most promising due to the urgent need for harmonization. Several concepts unmistakably found in this tradition's fundamental sources, the Hadith, the Qur'an, and the Sunnah, show how often attention the Islamic tradition has paid to both natural and urban growth. Traditional Islamic towns offered a range of experiences, from the intimate world of Home to the aspirations of the local population on a more global scale. This study critically assesses Islamic ethics and principles for sustainable urban development. According to Shari'a, the ancient Islamic law, this necessitates that the built environment be envisioned and governed in a way that advances morals and the growth of society. Urban zoning and land use rules should prioritize social integration and protect people's rights and needs since urban planning decisions affect social life in the built environment. A variety of basic Islamic ideals, such as human welfare and glory, justice and equality, central consideration, unanimity and kindness, economic development, security and safety, and environmental protection, must be considered when planning an Islamic metropolis. These principles could be a foundation for sustainable urban development wherever and whenever. In this research, traditional judgments support several pertinent Islamic beliefs. Eminent judges and jurists rendered these decisions in the early Muslims' customary courtroom settings. The primary sources of Shari'a, from which most were descended, are the Qur'an, Hadith, and Sunnah. This research also attempts to look into how Islamic design paradigms may be used to create urban settings that are more habitable, environmentally friendly, and culturally sensitive.

The research is concerned with studying neighborhoods design and development in Egypt. Neighborhoods face many urban challenges and threats which have environmental, social and economic impacts on any future development. The research aims to develop environmentally responsible model of neighborhoods. It could be achieved through sustainable planning process, developing the mechanism of urban design elements and the resource management of the physical environment in order to enhance quality of life and sustain natural resources. The research discusses and analyzes urban planning trends and rating systems for urban development to draw out design elements and a set of criteria for enhancing physical urban context of neighborhoods. An analytical study for neighborhood case studies is performed to conclude the best sustainable practices of urban design elements. The study also ensures the importance of computational simulation use in planning and design processes to achieve high-performance buildings and urban spaces. The research defines a methodology to develop Graduates villages in Burullus lake into sustainable neighborhoods to accommodate future urban development through optimizing urban parameters that would collectively promote high density urban growth, maximize land efficiency, develop mobility and energy systems and sustain natural resources with the assistance of simulation tools.

This paper aims at finding means for restructuring residential areas in Libya so they can became sustainable. It will employ a method of evaluation to achieve its objectives. S ustainable design recognizes that human civilization is an integral part of the natural resources upon which all biological life of the planet depends. This places environmental understanding at the core of design of urban places and cities, conceived as part of their natural context that must be preserved and improved if the human community is to survive. The term sustainability has emerged in the past several decades as a broad set of principles that address economic, social and environmental development at all scales, local, regional and global. (See Box A The concept of sustainability on the following page). Sustainable design dramatically enlarges the range of issues and opportunities that the design professions must address, in order to: • preserve biological diversity and environmental integrity, • contribute to the health of air, water, and soils, • incorporate design and construction that reflect bioregional climatic conditions, and • reduce and eliminate the deteriorating impacts of human use. Sustainable design requires an understanding of environmental consequences of natural system requirements of the built environment. The Center for Regenerative Studies, California Polytechnic Institute, Pomona, CA (Figs. 1 and 2) is an example where an arid warm local climate has been impacted positively by construction of on-site water collection and water cleansing (through constructed wetlands) Summary Sustainable design represents a set of principles of planning, design, and construction that endeavor to preserve and improve the environmental health of people and contingent natural systems. Contemporary Residential Areasas an Example of Tradition-led Urban Design in Islamic Cities. Case study of Jazan in Saudi Arabia
This article focuses on how modern housing environment is shaped via the specifics of construction in extremely challenging weather conditions in the cities of Saudi Arabia. With the overall goal that modern housing must be eco-and human-friendly in mind, the authors have attempted to identify the characteristic features of the Islamic cities and traditional local methods of construction. The article presents typical solutions of local architecture and urban plans, expecting that they might render significant guidelines for the spatial organisation of modern cities. A case study of Jazan city and its neighbourhood has been intended to analyse not only the spatial design of the city but also a recently worked out Masterplan. Both the architecture and the urban planning of Jazan city might serve as a good example of modern interpretation of heritage that underlies high quality housing environment.
